The Healthy Church Checklist

A church’s health and growth are not accidental but the result of intentional, God-honoring practices. This blog post introduces a comprehensive checklist to help church leaders evaluate their congregation’s vitality and identify areas for growth. Drawing from biblical principles, 24 years of personal church planting and coaching as well as the wisdom of other seasoned church planters, this checklist covers the essential elements that contribute to a healthy, vibrant church community.

1. Vision and Mission Clarity

  • Does your church have a clear, God-inspired vision and mission?
  • Is this vision communicated effectively and regularly to the congregation?
  • Do your church’s activities align with its vision and mission?

A clear vision and mission provide direction and purpose, uniting the congregation in a common goal. It’s crucial that every member understands why the church exists and how they contribute to its mission.

2. Spiritual Health and Discipleship

  • Is there a strong emphasis on prayer and the study of Scripture?
  • Does your church actively engage in making disciples, following Jesus’ command in Matthew 28:19-20?
  • Are there opportunities for spiritual growth and accountability?

A healthy church prioritizes the spiritual well-being of its members, nurturing a deep, personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ and fostering a community of discipleship. Keep in mind that discipleship isn’t merely the gathering of information but putting that knowledge into practice. Our heart should be that people will not only receive information but it would lead to life transformation.

3. Worship that Honors God

  • Is worship conducted in a manner that honors God and edifies the congregation?
  • Does your worship service reflect both reverence and joy?
  • Are various forms of worship expressions encouraged and explored?

Worship is a vital aspect of church life. It should be engaging, genuine, and reflective of God’s character. Remember, worship isn’t simply about a music style or a portion of your Sunday service. Worship is so much more. Music and singing are just one way in which we worship.

4. Community and Fellowship

  • Does your church foster a strong sense of community among its members?
  • Are there regular opportunities for fellowship and building relationships?
  • Is your church welcoming to newcomers, creating an inclusive environment?

The church is called to be a family where members support, encourage, and care for one another. Genuine fellowship reflects the love of Christ to the world. Here is an observation: At the completion of the Sunday service, do people leave quickly or do they hangout and fellowship? If they leave quickly, you may need to ponder if you have a community of faith or simply a gathering of people on a Sunday morning. There is a diffrence.

5. Outreach and Evangelism

  • Is your church actively involved in outreach and evangelism, locally and beyond?
  • Do you equip and encourage members to share their faith?
  • Are there partnerships with other organizations to extend your church’s impact?

A healthy church does not exist solely for itself but is committed to spreading the gospel and serving the broader community. When it comes to inreach or outreach, the church is more than able to do both. Discipe believers but also keep an outeard focus. JEsus cares about the lost. The church should care about the things Jesus cares about.

6. Leadership Development

  • Does your church identify and nurture potential leaders?
  • Are leaders provided with training and mentorship?
  • Is there a clear, biblical model of leadership in place?

Strong, godly leadership is essential for church health and growth. Developing leaders within the church ensures a future filled with effective governance and spiritual guidance.

7. Financial Stewardship

  • Does your church teach and practice biblical stewardship?
  • Is there transparency and accountability in how finances are managed?
  • Are resources allocated in a way that aligns with the church’s vision and mission?

Financial health and integrity support the church’s sustainability and effectiveness, enabling it to fulfill its mission without compromise. Important note: Make sure your budget reflects your mission and vision.

8. Adaptability and Innovation

  • Is your church open to change and innovation while remaining grounded in biblical truth?
  • Do you regularly evaluate ministries for effectiveness and relevance?
  • Are you proactive in addressing the needs and challenges of your community?

A healthy church is responsive to the leading of the Holy Spirit, willing to adapt and innovate to meet the changing needs of its members and community.

Using the Checklist

This checklist serves as a starting point for assessing your church’s health and vitality. It’s a tool to help leaders prayerfully consider where God is leading their congregation and what steps they can take to align more closely with His purposes.

Remember, the goal is not perfection but faithfulness and willingness to grow according to God’s grace and guidance. May your church be a place where believers flourish, the community is served, and God is glorified in all things.
