How to Raise Your Church’s Evangelism Temperature

Let’s be honest for a second. If you took your church’s evangelism temperature right now, what would the thermometer read? When’s the last time someone in your congregation actually shared the Gospel with a neighbor? I’m not talking about posting a Bible verse on social media or inviting someone to Easter service—I’m talking about actually sitting down with someone and talking about Jesus.

If you’re squirming a little right now, you’re not alone. Most churches have what I call “evangelism hypothermia”—they’re ice cold when it comes to actually sharing their faith. And here’s the kicker: if you want to know how to raise your church’s evangelism temperature, you’ve got to start by understanding why it’s so low in the first place.

Stop Making Evangelism Complicated

We’ve turned sharing the Gospel into this massive, intimidating thing that requires a seminary degree and a three-point sermon outline. No wonder people are terrified to open their mouths.

Here’s the truth: evangelism isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about sharing what Jesus has done in your life—your story, personal experience, and transformation.

The woman at the well didn’t have a theology degree. She just ran back to town and said, “Come see a man who told me everything I ever did.” And guess what? The whole town came out to meet Jesus.

Model What You Want to See

You can’t lead where you won’t go. If you want your church to be evangelistic, you’ve got to be evangelistic. And I don’t mean preaching from the pulpit—I mean actually talking to lost people about Jesus in your everyday life.

Your people are watching you. They’re taking their cues from your priorities, conversations, and calendar. If evangelism isn’t happening in your life, it’s not going to happen in theirs.

Create a Culture, Not Just Programs

Most churches try to fix their evangelism problem with events. Friendship Sunday. Outreach Saturday. Evangelism training on Wednesday nights.

Those things aren’t bad, but they’re not the solution. You can’t program your way to an evangelistic culture. Culture happens when evangelism becomes so normal, so natural, that it’s just part of who you are.

Start celebrating the stories. When someone shares their faith—even if the person didn’t get saved—make a big deal about it. Tell that story from the platform. Send that person a text. Let everyone know that this is what we do here.

Make It Personal, Not Preachy

The best evangelism happens in relationships, not in presentations. Train your people to share their story, not recite a script. Teach them to ask questions, not give answers. Show them how to love people, not just save souls.

When someone asks about your church, don’t immediately launch into theology. Tell them what God’s doing in your life. When a coworker is struggling, don’t just say you’ll pray for them—ask if you can pray with them right there.

Remove the Fear Factor

Want to know why most Christians don’t evangelize? They’re scared. They’re scared of rejection, of not knowing what to say, and of looking foolish.

Take the pressure off. Let them know it’s okay if people say no, if they don’t have all the answers, or if they stumble through it. Obedience matters more than eloquence.

Don’t wait until you feel ready. You’ll never read enough books or take enough classes to feel completely prepared. Just start.

Begin with your neighbors. Your coworkers are another great place to practice. Even the cashier at the grocery store could use some genuine conversation. Show authentic interest in people’s lives and see where the conversation naturally leads.
